My larger quilts are often made for shows, which gives me both a deadline and a theme to help focus my energies and creative juices!

Here is a small selection of quilts I've created in the last few years; these larger quilts are the ones I take round the country to talks and area/regional days.

A dramatic stained glass style quilt, using ribbon instead of bias binding,
as there are only straight lines in the design. It was made for the Malvern Quilt Show
when it's theme was (appropriately!) Stars, and uses metallic fabrics and threads.

Fantasy Forest

I was inspired by the theme of Forest, Trees and Leaves, for Quilts UK
at Malvern in 2001. So inspired that I submitted 3 different quilts ....
and still managed to sleep, eat and teach! Fantasy Forest is an
unashamedly fun piece. I found it hard to decide whether to do these
60s-style psychaedelic-shaped trees in colour or shades of grey ...
and at some stage I thought I'd try both and ended up with this double-sided quilt!

(You can see one of my other designs for the show, Sumac in a Storm, below)

Summer Seaside sampler (and detail)

Once seen, never forgotten! This fun quilt was made for the National Quilt Championships of 2001, and won 1st prize for embellishment and 2nd prize in the theme category,
Down Memory Lane.

 Moonscape

This quilt was made in response to a request from Shipley Art Gallery
for a contribution to their 'Contemporary Quilters' exhibition in 1998.
It's one of my 'kinetic' quilts: where elements in the design are attached
by velcro strips, so that they can be repositioned to give different effects.
The pictures show two of the multitude of options, as most of the
circles can be swopped around and/or rotated.

Inspired by New Zealand

This invisible-machine-appliqued quilt was inspired by our belated 25th anniversary treat trip to New Zealand, Christmas 2004. Napier suffered a severe earthquake in the early 1930s and was then rebuilt in Art Deco style, and there is a feast of patterns on the buildings which totally inspired me! The quilt was made for the 2006Exeter quilt show.

These two quilts were part of my present to Chris for his 50th birthday, last November. They are both reminders of our New Zealand trip, with the left hand one a design inspired by Maori and fern patterns, and the other in memory of a bright heliconia plant we saw and photographer in Auckland botanical gardens. Both quilts include pieces of New Zealand fabrics we bought there!

Iris Landscape

A commission for a friend's living room, this quilt is a gentle scene of irises set in
a landscape of hills, trees and water.

The pattern and instructions are featured in stained glass patchwork techniques
under the section on taming challenging fabrics.

Overture and Beginners, Please

The theme at Malvern in 2002 was 'Buttons and Bows'. My rather quirky approach
to the theme won me the trophy for humour!

A quartet of similar penguin musicians features as a pattern in the
my book
stained glass patchwork techniques.

Tree Frog Dreaming

After reading a book on Aboriginal art, and seeing a painting called 'Witchety Grub Dreaming' (really!), I wondered what dreams a treefrog might have.
This is one possibility.

Sumac in a Storm

A different palatte and technique from my usual ones - using foundation-piecing and invisible machine applique, as well as strip-piecing, fabric painting, dyeing and hand quilting.
